3EeePC 900 cute but needs video editing  Jan 08, 2009
The Asus Eee PC 900 16G solid state Linux is as cute as a button, but the internet connection doesn't work with all ISP's. Also, I was hoping it came with video editing software already bundled, but it just plays video and has a simple web cam. I guess I'll have to keep searching for something to download.

5Excellent travel pc  Jan 06, 2009
What a great machine. I was a little skeptical when my wife asked for this but it has worked out nicely.

We got the linux version and added EEBUNTU.

Great for most needs and very small.

Typing at first is a little challenging getting used to the smaller keyboard.

All in a very useful machine.

4Linux + Upgradeable = WINNER!  Dec 30, 2008
The wife unit bought me this little Linux-based boxen, which sports a single 16GB SSD, for Christmas.

I immediately upgraded the 1GB Asus RAM stick to a 2GB Kingston 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz stick by first removing the little eee sticker covering one of the bottom bay set screws; then pulled apart the 1GB stick's clips and popped in the 2GB Kingston stick; finally closed up and rebooted to the BIOS by pressing F2 after powerup. The 2GB was immediately recognized (AFAIK, this little box will recognize up to 4GB RAM - but no stick is manufactured yet in that size).

The next thing I did was to download the Ubuntu eee 8.04.1 distro, configure a bootable USB pendrive, then boot to an install onto a 4GB Sandisk SDHC card in the 900's slot.

Voila! A dual-boot solid-state Linux box! (access the BIOS boot menu by pressing Esc at bootup).

This little notebook recognizes my iPod shuffle, Canon A570is camera, Prolific-based USB RS232 adapter (which i use for controlling high-frequency amateur radio transceivers during PSK31 ops), Toshiba portable USB drives, and many other devices, such as the Targus USB bluetooth dongle.

I can also play mp3s and even watch movies saved in a variety of digital formats (such as .avi).

The only reason that I give this item four stars is the short battery life of two to two and a half hours. Asus blew it on this one - the Eee PC 1000 has the edge in run time, keyboard size, and includes bluetooth.

5Slick Little Netbook  Dec 29, 2008
I purchased an EeePC900 mainly to be a backup computer, in case my desktop fails. It is so small that it takes very little space to store away. As a working PC, it performs very well, if you can live without a CD ROM drive. I bought the Linux version - but found that it's loaded with their "own" version of Linux Remix - which is quite different than Ubuntu. Still, it runs very smoothly. Good Points: It's compact. Has a sharp LCD screen. Boots up fast. No moving parts (except for a small cooling fan) as the memory is entirely flash - no hard drive. Built in wireless card. Runs efficiently and the touch-pad works very well. Runs on 12VDC - which means it can be charged in your car or RV. Negatives: The keyboard keys are really tight for any extensive typing. (An external keyboard makes this much easier to use.) Speakers are a bit tinny sounding. Otherwise - I am very happy with this little machine - especially for the price.

2asus eee 900 review  Dec 28, 2008
my new eee 900 16 GB SSD 1 GB RAM, hangs 3/4 of the time on boot up, requires hard power down. I try to watch the drive and not move the mouse until its off, but not much help, system never comes back on it's own. Ready to send back to JR Music world... cant get thru to Asus Tech Support.
a real shame, I love this little Linux PC othrwise .
according to Forums and google searched, these eee PCs have lots of issues. Great concept and price, and No Windows, i.e. no viruses, no adware . . . but quality seems to not be there, and Asus tech support is swamped
